Our Song of the Open Road

Afoot and light-hearted I take to the open road,
Healthy, free, the world before me,
The long brown path before me leading wherever I choose."

Mendocino: a Taste of Maine on the Northern Cali Coast

Ever watch Murder, She Wrote? The setting was coastal Maine, but it was actually filmed in the tiny town of Mendocino, California. We only stopped here for a few hours, but this 1,000 Places to See Before You Die deserves its own entry. Partly because it was so cool, partly because we took so many photos, and partly because it doesn't pair well with wine country or the redwoods.

We drove to Mendocino last Sunday morning en route to the redwoods. It was a last-minute add, but we are both glad we decided to stop here! We drove up Highway 1 along the coast, enjoying the scenic views of the Pacific Ocean. We stopped at a scenic viewpoint just before getting to Mendocino because the view looked extra cool. When we stopped, we realized that there was a path all the way to the edge of a cliff overlooking the ocean. Of course, we had to walk down it. This landscape is so gorgeous!!

After some exploration at this viewpoint, we drove the remaining 10 minutes to the town of Mendocino. We walked around the main street area and then through a residential section to the water front. This town is small enough that locals walk or bike into town - very cool. It had the feel of a quintessential small town from the movies... probably why it was chosen as the set for a TV series.

We explored the area down by the water for a bit and then headed back into town for lunch at Mendo Burger. I had a great rock cod sandwich and Tom had an organic, grass-fed beef burger. The woman running the place felt like a mom taking care of her kids. It was a nice feeling.

Earlier, we'd eyed a bakery that got our taste buds flowing. After something savory for lunch, we were craving something sweet. Garden Bakery is run by two women who just bake whatever the heck they want every day and sell it until they run out. From that day's selections, we chose a seven-layer bar and a white chocolate macadamia nut cookie to split. Both were flavor explosions in our mouths. Yum!!

From Mendocino, we continued north into the awe-inspiring redwood forests. Stay tuned for a post from the Avenue of Giants!
