Our Song of the Open Road

Afoot and light-hearted I take to the open road,
Healthy, free, the world before me,
The long brown path before me leading wherever I choose."

More Florida Beaches

After St. Augustine, we were headed to Tom's grandmother's in Palm Beach, but we decided to hit a few more beaches along the way to break up the drive. We did some research and settled on Flagler Beach and New Smyrna Beach.

Flagler Beach has a quaint, quiet town and a relaxed, small beach. The sand is orange because of all the coquina shell fragments. It was pretty chill, so we hung out for a few hours and then continued south.

New Smyrna Beach was also described as a laid back beach, but we would hardly have called it that. We were shocked to see that the beach has been turned into an extension of the road and parking lot... there is literally a two-lane road (complete with a speed limit) through the sand. Behind the "road," people parked their cars in the sand and were sitting in chairs in front of them like a football game tailgate. Needless to say, it was a little hard to relax here. I never thought I'd have to worry about getting hit by a car while relaxing on the beach! We didn't stay long.

We had a nice day, but I wouldn't recommend the latter beach to anyone. From New Smyrna, we headed to North Palm Beach for a few relaxing days (Tues. night to Fri. morning) visiting Tom's paternal grandmother. Blog post coming soon!
